TRIBES & BRIDGES

TRIBES & BRIDGES

Each teller (La’Ron Williams, African-American, Antonio Sacre, Cuban-American and me, Irish-American) shares how we were taught about prejudice, sometimes being on the receiving end and sometimes being the one who had the bias. Our stories are unique – being raised in an all black neighborhood or an all-white Catholic parish or straddling two cultures and being forced to choose – and, yet, our stories come alive with common themes of family love and loyalty, and humor in the face of adversity. In this performance, you’ll find yourself in Miami, Florida, Flint, Michigan and the Southside of Chicago to meet a mean school crossing guard, a well-intentioned teacher who unconsciously shames her students of color, old women who lower their aching bones onto city sidewalks for non-violent, civil rights demonstrations and even a flan-throwing grandmother. Lately, we three bridge builders have been getting booked at colleges and conferences, but high schools and other venues enjoy this show as well.
